Artist and illustrator Shirley Chapman makes the produce industry look good

videochapman

California artist and illustrator Shirley Chapman has spent much of her career in the produce industry — she's even won a Clio Award, the advertising industry's version of an Oscar, for her work for clients like Village Farms, the Washington Apple Commission and International Paper.

When Village Farms was looking for an artist to create a painting commemorating the company's 25th anniversary, CEO Michael DeGiglio never considered anyone other than Chapman.

"She has a style all her own and she understands our industry," DeGiglio said. "Her use of color and symbolism tells our story beautifully in a single painting." (You can see that work here).

Since 2003, Chapman has also created International Paper’s annual PMA Fresh Summit poster, one of the highlights of the show, always featuring the host city and its connection to the produce industry.

Our Maggie Giuffrida caught up with Chapman to talk about her work and the creative process behind it.
